At WJK Coaching, we’ve always believed that rugby is more than a game. It’s a tool to shape disciplined, grounded, and resilient young men and women. This mindset didn’t start with us, it was deeply rooted in the philosophy of our founder, Professor Wilbur Kraak, who said:
“We don’t just coach players. We develop people.”

As we close out the month of July — one marked by remembrance, reflection, and legacy, we shift our focus to mental conditioning for the next generation of community rugby players. Inspired by the book Champion Minded by Allistair McCaw, here are practical mindset tools every young player should carry, both on and off the field.
💭 1. Champions Win the Day Before the Match
Being champion-minded starts long before kick-off. It’s about how you show up during the week — to training, to school, to life.
Consistency builds confidence.
✅ Tip: Keep a weekly “mindset tracker” with goals for focus, effort, and energy levels. Rate yourself after each session.
🧠 2. Control the Controllables
You can’t control the referee, the weather, or the bounce of the ball — but you can control your attitude, effort, and preparation.
Champion-minded players take ownership, not excuses.
✅ Tip: Write down 3 things you can control before every match. Focus only on those.
🚫 3. Ditch the Comfort Zone
Growth only happens under pressure. Mental strength is like a muscle — you build it by doing hard things. Prof. Kraak often told us:
“If it’s uncomfortable, your players are on the right track.”
✅ Tip: Choose one thing a week that stretches you — a harder fitness set, a leadership role, or a post-match reflection session.
🧘♂️ 4. Build Mental Habits, Not Just Physical Routines
Top players aren’t just physically strong — they’re mentally sharp. That comes from rituals and routines: breathing exercises, visualisation, journaling, or prayer.
✅ Tip: Start each week with a 10-minute visualisation. Picture yourself tackling with intent, leading with calm, or scoring with confidence.
🔁 5. Bounce Back Like a Champion
Mistakes will happen. It’s how you respond that defines you. Never shout about a dropped ball — instead asked how it could be fixed next time.
✅ Tip: Use the “Learn and Let Go” method:
- What happened?
- What can I learn?
- What will I do better next time?
Then move on.

💬 Final Thoughts
A champion mindset isn’t reserved for elite players — it’s built daily in school yards, club fields, and small towns. That’s why WJK Coaching continues to develop players with purpose, not just performance.
This is your invitation to rise above talent alone. To lead with character. To train with intent. To be champion minded — just like the man whose legacy we carry forward.
